My approach to psychotherapy is collaborative, empathic, and oriented toward achieving the results my clients desire. I provide my clients with skills to increase awareness of and change problematic patterns that can lead to feeling stuck. Left unaddressed, these patterns can take a toll on relationships, work, health, and self-esteem. My goal is to create a comfortable, non-judgmental, and supportive space for exploration and change and to help people get back to living a more meaningful and enjoyable life. In addition, while historically the field of psychology has embraced a medical model that emphasizes pathology and deficits, in my practice, I emphasize a “strength-based” approach to treatment in which I help clients identify and build from strengths, resiliency, and other positive qualities they already have, and use those to overcome obstacles.

I enjoy working with young adults, adults, and couples, and draw from a variety of evidence-based approaches to psychotherapy to provide the most effective treatments. I use a flexible approach in order to meet the unique needs of each individual.

 Education and Training

I earned my doctorate in psychology from the PGSP-Stanford Psy.D. Consortium in Palo Alto. I completed my pre-doctoral internship at the Department of Veterans Affairs in Los Angeles and clinical practica at the Palo Alto VA, San Jose Job Corps, and the San Francisco VA. In addition, for 4 years I researched methods of substance abuse prevention for college students. Prior to graduate school, I worked at a residential adolescent drug rehabilitation center in Malibu, CA. I received my undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

About me

I truly enjoy going to work every day and find the work that I do extremely rewarding. I feel like I grow right along with my clients and really value the genuine relationships we share. Outside of my private practice, I am also a professor of Introduction to Psychology for undergraduate students, which is both challenging and fun. When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with friends and family, being active (running, playing volleyball), and catching up on TV shows (Game of Thrones, anyone?). As much as I am focused on career-related activities, I strive to achieve a good work-life balance.

Fees and Services

I do not take insurance. However, you may be able to submit a bill for our services to your insurance company. Services may be covered in full or in part by your health insurance or employee benefit plan. Please check your coverage carefully by asking the following questions:

  • Do I have mental health insurance benefits?
  • What is my deductible and has it been met?
  • How many sessions per year does my health insurance cover?
  • What is the coverage amount per therapy session?
  • Is approval required from my primary care physician?

I am currently registered as a Psychological Assistant ( PSB 94020898) in San Francisco. Among other requirements for licensure, psychologists must have at least 1500 hours of supervised experience after they receive their doctorate. I am gaining my experience under Dr. Brac Selph’s supervision. This presents an opportunity for clients to receive high quality services at a significant discount. Please contact me to discuss my fees further.

Cash, credit cards, and check accepted for payment.

Cancellation Policy

If you do not show up for your scheduled therapy appointment, and you have not notified me at least 24 hours in advance, you will be required to pay the full cost of the session.

Contact Information

To schedule an appointment, please contact Dr. Kagan by phone. Prior to a first appointment, I conduct a free phone consultation (approx. 15 min) where we can briefly discuss your concerns and any questions you might have in determining whether I am a good match for what you are looking for. I will also ask you some questions to make sure I have the appropriate experience and resources to meet your needs.
